You toss and turn in bed for hours, but can’t fall asleep? You aren’t alone. More than half of the world’s population has troubles falling asleep every night.
To be able to fall asleep, you first must have to find out what’s preventing you from that. Here are the 12 possible culprits:
1. Uncomfortable Position
Hitting the sack in an uncomfortable position can make you unable to fall asleep. Try sleeping in these positions.
2. Absence of Bedtime Rituals
Create a bedtime ritual that you will perform every time before going to bed. This can be taking a hot shower or reading a short story.
3. Mind Overload
Having your mind overloaded during the nighttime can make you unable to fall asleep. It’s sometimes hard to distract yourself from negative thoughts but try to direct your train of thoughts on something else.
4. Not Sleepy Enough
To be able to fall asleep, you must feel sleepy. If you go to bed unsleepy, the chances are slim you’ll fall asleep right away.
To make yourself sleepy, read a non-engaging novel or watch a boring classic movie.
Don’t drink coffee seven hours before your bedtime if you want to fall asleep the same moment you hit the sack.
It is true that alcohol can make you fall asleep faster, but drinking alcohol before sleep will make you wake up often during the night.
To prevent this, don’t drink alcohol two hours before bedtime.
7. Laptop in Bed
Your bed isn’t your workplace. Never bring a laptop to your bed if you want a good night’s sleep. Making your bed a workplace has dire consequences on the quality of sleep.
If you live in an area where there’s a lot of noise, that could make you unable to fall asleep.
Solution: Use earplugs to distract yourself from those noises that make you unable to fall asleep.
You won’t be able to fall asleep if there’s a lot of artificial light in your bedroom. Try to make your bedroom as dark as possible so you could fall asleep tonight.
10. Lack of Schedule
Going to bed at a different time every night can disrupt your wake-sleep cycle and make you unable to fall asleep.
Solution: Go to bed at the same time every night.
Exercise is good, but it can render you unable to fall asleep if work out before bedtime. Never work out before going to bed if you want a good night’s sleep!
12. Wrong Air Temperature
You won’t be able to fall asleep if the temperature in your bedroom is above 75 degrees Fahrenheit or below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
