On 9/29/2020, Joe Biden declined to say if he would “pack” the Supreme Court during the first debate, “Whatever position I take on that, that will become the issue,” Biden said. “The American people should speak. You should go out and vote.” Trump chimed in, repeating moderator Chris Wallace’s question about if Biden would “pack the court” but the former vice president didn’t answer.
Trump attacked Biden over his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings, “China ate your lunch, Joe. And no wonder, your son goes in and he takes out billions of dollars, he takes out billions of dollars to manage,” Trump said. “He makes millions of dollars. And while we’re at it, why is it, just out of curiosity, the mayor of Moscow’s wife gave your son $3.5 million. What did he do to deserve it? What did he do with Burisma?” Biden replied, “None of that is true,” adding that Trump’s claims regarding alleged business-related wrongdoing on Hunter Biden’s part had been “totally discredited.”
“My son did nothing wrong at Burisma. He doesn’t want to let me answer because he knows I have the truth,” Biden said. “His position has been totally, thoroughly discredited — by the media, by our allies, by the World Bank, by everyone.”
Trump and Biden continually talked with each other throughout much of the debate, leading Wallace at one point to say, “Gentlemen, you realize you’re both speaking at the same time?” Wallace eventually raised his voice to say, “I’m the moderator of this debate” before finishing the question.
